Our story

In the beginning...

… in a small Mid Devon market town, inspired by the desire to retain a bookshop in the High Street, the Crediton Community Bookshop (CCB) plan began in 2012. Two community meetings shaped the aims of the enterprise and a community share issue was launched. To say ‘the rest is history’ is perhaps to underplay a period of intense activity.

Shameless publicity, invaluable support from the Co-operative Enterprise Hub, popular events including an evening of poetry and food in a local hostelry, continued through the summer. Helped with grants from Crediton Town Council and the Big Lottery’s Awards for All scheme the committee raised the funds and secured a tenancy.

With a lick of paint, the appointment of a part-time manager, and guest appearances by performance poet Matt Harvey, Horrible Science author Nick Arnold, and our patrons Babette Cole and the late Mal Peet, suddenly we were open for business!

Since then...

… CCB has gone from strength to strength. Our projects and events are shaped by the passions of those involved and our commitment to a become a strong and vibrant community resource.

We sell books, host events, work with partnership organisations, organise author visits and bookfairs for schools and literary festivals and much more. We believe books can change lives and strive to inspire books & reading for all!

How does it work?

We are an Independent Provident Society (company registration no. IP031718) with over 300 shareholders. Our shareholders and our wider community inform our progress and development, submitting ideas by calling into the shop or contacting us by email or phone. These are raised with our committee who meet monthly to review progress and discuss future development. To ensure we are fulfilling our objectives we ask our shareholders & participants to provide feedback, completing surveys and working in focus groups. At our AGM our shareholders are also invited to scrutinise the accounts and elect board members.

Our day-to-day activities are supervised by our paid manager and our fantastic volunteer team who help to staff the shop, manage administrative tasks & organise activities both at the shop and further afield. Many of our projects are guided by our volunteer strengths and passions.

The success of the Community Bookshop so far is clearly due to tremendous support from the community. We are excited about the continuing and evolving project and hope that you are too. Join us!
