Chair & Board Member recruitment – Background information

Thank you for your interest in joining the Board of Crediton Community Bookshop (CCB).

The current Board is made up of six people, including a Secretary and Treasurer.  The Board would like to add new skills and experience to increase the capacity to support the organisation in its continuing development.

Sadly, our former Chair, Peter Craske, passed away at Christmas 2017, creating a vacancy which none of the current Board feel ideally equipped to carry out. Peter led the enterprise for 18 months, overseeing the successful move to our new premises, securing significant new funds and strengthening the Board with new appointments. This is an exciting time for CCB; our latest accounts show a sound financial position with a significant growth in sales. Our outreach programme to schools, which won the Princes Award from the Devon Agricultural Association in 2017, is set for further expansion to bring books and authors to more than 3000 young people during 2018. And a new project to develop a creative hub and gallery behind the bookshop is taking shape, with draft designs ready to show potential funders.

We believe that CCB is effectively demonstrating the potential of the social enterprise model, combining a sound business with community benefit activities that make a real difference and we are confident we know how to develop the enterprise as an increasingly important asset to the community.

The Board is responsible for the strategic management and direction of CCB. The Chair has the opportunity to influence and lead, working with other Board members and the Chief Executive, to ensure CCB continues to thrive and fulfil its potential. New Board members would be welcomed to an established team with agreed roles and responsibilities. Meetings are currently held quarterly.

Recruitment process

  • Informal discussions with Acting Chair and Chief Exec.
  • Letter of application and CV – closing date 30th June 2018
  • Interview and presentation during July
  • Start date and induction process agreed with successful candidate according to availability August – November 2018.
